The harbours on the Etruscan coast for sailing… and more
The statue of the Sailor of San Vincenzo bears witness of the sailing tradition along the coast, which is animated by many marinas.
Walking on the promenade of San Vincenzo you encounter a giant sculpture that faces out to sea. 7 meters tall, with his nose turned up and the wind in his hair, every day the scent of the sea and the taste of the waves reach his feet. Il Marinaio, the sculpture by Maestro Giampaolo Talani, is to be found in the marina of San Vincenzo. The Sailor symbolises the hope and love of the sea of all sailors and sailing enthusiasts who plough the waves to discover the coast and new horizons in vessels of every kind. The ports of the larger towns on the coast offer the possibility of mooring or renting boats to set sail for the coves and gulfs of the coast or to head towards Elba and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. To discover marine wonders you can rent bareboat, boat without a crew or boat with skipper. Alternatively you have plenty of opportunities for diving and snorkelling in the crystal clear sea, fishing trips, or simply relaxing on board and admiring the colours of the horizon.
Here’s where to moor your boat and enjoy life ashore on the Etruscan Coast.
San Vincenzo, Marina di Cecina, Piombino and Rosignano are the main marinas where you can moor your boat and go to dine, have an aperitif or visit the sights in the lively town centres. The marina of San Vincenzo has a wide variety of bars, restaurants and shops, which form the backdrop to numerous sporting and cultural events. If, on the other hand, you decide to berth at Rosignano Solvay, just south of the splendid Castiglioncello, you’ll find yourself into one of the major ports in the province of Livorno with a landing place for pleasure craft in the harbour of Cala de’ Medici, where numerous services are available, from Wi-Fi to electricity supply, guarding to refuelling. It should come as no surprise that Cala de’ Medici was nominated in 2015 as one the best “Marina Resorts” in Italy.
The renovated and constantly evolving harbour of Marina di Cecina offers boating enthusiasts tourist facilities and many other attractions and services, such as clubs and restaurants, in areas from the docks to the hinterland. Lastly, the small marina of Salivoli in Piombino overlooks the stretch of sea between the mainland and the Island of Elba and offers numerous services for boaters. The medieval old town, with its bars and restaurants, is within very easy reach of the marina. A short twenty-minute walk along the seafront leads to a terrace that extends into the sea, the famous Piazza Bovio.
From Piazza Bovio to the statue of the Sailor of San Vincenzo, from the gulf of Baratti to the exclusive bay of Castiglioncello, the whole coast inspires voyages through the waves.
